After my hike, I set out to drive to the Northwest
corner of the park to camp for the night, with plans to hike Harney Peak the
next day, which is the highest point in South Dakota. Along the way I
saw some more wildlife...
Also passed through some more crazy tunnels...
This is a rock formation they call "The
Spires"
I couldn't decide which of the next two pictures I
liked the best so I put them both in....
One more tunnel...
When I got to the campground, it was full.
Looking at the map, the only other one I could find close by was the KOA
Rushmore, which I was trying to avoid, and as it turns out for good reason.
When I checked in, I got site # 487, they have around 500 sites, the tents on
either side of me were about 7' away. There were kids on bicycles
everywhere, and with all the campfires, it looked like Kuwait after the
Iraquis torched the oil wells. It was campground hell. The only
way I could rescue it was to have a beer and cook a decent meal. I cut
up some potatoes, and cooked them in some olive oil with garlic, and when they
were browned threw in some red pepper. It was quite tasty. My plan
at this point was to get up, hike Harney Peak, stay in the other campground,
and then head out the day after to see Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Little
did I know that the universe had other plans for me {ominous music}.......
